How to track calories without weighing food
The food scale is why most people quit tracking. Here's a realistic estimation system — hand portions, unit counting, and AI logging — plus the few cases where weighing still wins.
Every calorie tracking guide eventually tells you to buy a food scale and weigh everything you eat. It's technically correct — and it's why most people quit tracking within two weeks. Here's the case for a more realistic approach, and how to keep estimates accurate enough to actually work.
First, the honest premise: precision was never the point
Calorie tracking works by making you consistently aware of intake so you can adjust. The tolerances involved are looser than scale-evangelists imply: US nutrition labels are legally allowed to be off by up to 20%, USDA reference values are averages across samples, and day-to-day metabolic variation adds its own noise. If the underlying data has a built-in error band, weighing your rice to the gram is false precision.
What actually matters is consistent, directionally-correct logging you'll still be doing in month three. A ±15% estimate you log every day beats a ±2% measurement you abandon.
Estimation methods that work without a scale
1. Hand portions
Your hand is a calibrated measuring tool you always carry:
- Palm (thickness included) ≈ one portion of protein — roughly 100–120g of cooked meat or fish
- Cupped hand ≈ one portion of carbs — cooked rice, pasta, oats
- Fist ≈ one portion of vegetables
- Thumb ≈ one portion of fats — butter, oil, nut butter
2. Reference objects
A deck of cards ≈ 100g of meat. A tennis ball ≈ a medium fruit or half a cup. A dice cube ≈ a teaspoon of butter. These stick in memory better than gram counts.
3. Count units, not grams
Many foods come in natural units with known values: 1 egg ≈ 70–80 kcal, 1 slice of bread ≈ 80–100 kcal, 1 medium banana ≈ 105 kcal. Logging "2 eggs and toast" as units is fast and surprisingly accurate.
4. Read the label once, then trust the package
For packaged food, portioning is already done for you — a 320g package of pierogi is exactly what the label says. No scale needed for anything with a barcode or label.

When you should still weigh food
Honesty requires a list of exceptions. A scale earns its place when:
- You're in a tight cutting phase — e.g. contest prep or the last few kilos, where the margin between deficit and maintenance is small.
- You're portioning calorie-dense foods. Oils, nuts, nut butters, cheese, granola — the difference between one tablespoon and two of olive oil is 120 kcal, and eyeballed pours run large. If you weigh only one category of food, weigh your fats.
- You're calibrating. Weighing a food a handful of times teaches your eye what 100g actually looks like. That calibration then makes all your future estimates better — a scale as a training tool, not a lifestyle.
A realistic workflow
- Packaged food: scan the barcode or log the label portion.
- Simple meals: type them in natural units — "2 fried eggs and toast with butter."
- Mixed or restaurant plates: photo, or describe the components in one sentence.
- Fats and oils: measure with a spoon (or occasionally weigh) until your eye is calibrated.
- Watch the weekly trend, not the daily number — and adjust portions when the trend stalls.
That's the whole system. No scale on the counter, no database spelunking — just consistent estimates, logged fast enough that you'll keep doing it.
